Background Sky

Surface Brightness rough equivalence to the Bortle Scale. Lower SB numbers are brighter, while lower Bortle numbers are darker.

Bortle 9 = SB 17.5
Bortle 8 = SB 18
Bortle 7 = SB 18.5
Bortle 6 = SB 19
Bortle 5 = SB 20
Bortle 4 = SB 21
Bortle 3 = SB 22
Bortle 2 = SB 23
Bortle 1 = SB 24

For instance if you live in a Bortle 7 area don't expect to see objects with a Surface Brightness higher than 19. Given enough long exposures and the proper filters you can capture them but you will not see them through the camera.
